It occurred to me last night that this little head is seen by more people each day than anything else I’ve ever drawn. It’s the default Tumblr avatar.
For years I worked in the same office with David Karp, the wonderkind Internet entrepreneur. In April 2007, he walked over to my desk and asked me to design a little head logo for this new application he was building called “Tumblr.”
I drew a couple versions and he picked one.
It’s still the default avatar (for the time being!)

Now testing: Automatic post recovery
Ever lose a post to a pesky browser crash? Never again!
Tumblr now captures a copy of your new post every few seconds, just in case your browser crashes or you accidently close the window.

Yesterday, Amit Gupta had a great suggestion to include thumbnails on Video posts in the Dashboard:
I love Tumblr, but I almost never watch the videos people post. But I click on photos to see the bigger version all the time.
Video posts could really use a still frame to give you a peek at what’s inside.
Anyone else feel this way?
We were already doing this with videos uploaded to Tumblr. Now we’ll also show thumbnails next to YouTube videos.
Thanks, Amit!

Feeling Kinda Blue?
Lessons in Loneliness is a year-long project that uses drawings to follow Blue, a person struggling with depression and alcoholism. LIL sheds light on the everyday thoughts a person struggling with mental illness and addiction may have. It hopes to create empathy and understanding for those dealing with similar issues. We won’t know how Blue’s journey ends until December, but LIL’s author promises an optimistic conclusion.

We’re kicking off a series of concerts to showcase the incredible talent on Tumblr. We’ll be holding the first one August 10th in our hometown of NYC.
Submit your band by July 22nd, 2009 for a chance at ultimate glory and $500!
